Research and planning: College magazine evaluation

I had a task of creating a college magazine through photoshop and a contents page using indesign. My magazine uses only two fonts the masthead font is called 'Type writer'. I chose this font for the masthead because it has a pixel effect on the text which fits in with the name of my magazine 'Clarendon Connection'. The word 'Connection' and pixel like font create a digital and modern environment. The second font i used is called 'script', i chose this font because it is bold and eye catching. An improvement that i know i need to make on the magazine cover is that i need more subheadings along the side so that there are more stories that the audience will instantly see and want to read. At the bottom of the screen there is a story that says 'Get Wesleys Story On Why He Came To Hyde' this should be a popular subject that a lot of first year students will be keen to buy and read the magazine as it suits their current situation. I had too make sure that the masthead always has a bigger font size than anything else in the magazine. This is because the masthead is the main heading and should therefore be the biggest and most important. I used the colour red because it is attractive to the eye and would stand out around the college. The the other two main colours are silver and white.

My magazine cover has a main colour scheme of red and silver, the only other colours opposing that is the brown building and the black t shirt that the student is wearing on the front cover. The colour red is very attractive to people so it will instantly catch the attention of the audience allowing them to pick up the magazine and read it. My magazine cover uses the Z layout this is because typically in Europe people will read from the top left and down to the bottom whereas in foreign countries they will read from the right side of the page or even downwards.

The contents page is a simple layout. The

This is my contents page. I have used a simple layout on this page so it is easier to read. The font is consistent throughout the page and so is the colour scheme (black, red and silver). At the bottom of the page there is a happy student and a pen. The happy student represents the way students will feel when they read the magazine. The pen is relevant to college life and also represents the work that students will have to put in to be happy like the other student.

I think that the contents page could be improves by adding more images. I also think the way I have used all 3 colours is too much.

  1. I really like the layout of the cover, as it's really eye catching and clear that its a college magazine. I really like the image in the middle, as it fits perfectly on the page, leaving room for the articles to be put around the top of the image, which really does look good! The contents page is a little hard to read, may I suggest a different colour scheme to be used on the contents page next time to make it easier to read? Over all your magazine is really effective and clearly suits the target audience of college students, good work!

  2. My first impressions are that your magazine really stands out, by using strong bold colours.
yet You haven't managed to use the three colour rule very well.
The image is used well because the target audience is around 16 to 18.
the area of development would be to arrange the text and images more appropriately, keep the colours consistent and use appropriate colours that are no biased.
    overall a good magazine.

one improvement is that you could add more story's to the front page =)
